Verreauxia

Bird genus - African Piculet is sister to, but deeply divergent from, the two other piculets in the genus Sasia. Reassign African Piculet from Sasia to the monotypic genus Verreauxia (Shakya et al. 2017; HBW/BirdLife, Clements). Verreauxia and Sasia have recently been proposed to form a distinct subfamily Sasiinae which is deeply divergent from the other piculets in the subfamily Picumninae (Sangster et al. 2022).
